SAVANNAH, Ga.- Dana Smith and Kevin Swecker both scored 18 points as Longwood swept the season series with fellow Division I Independent Savannah State in a 68-64 win at Tiger Arena.
Smith made 6 of 8 free throw attempts while Swecker made four 3-pointers.
Longwood led 64-56 with 4:53 remaining in the game but SSU rallied with six unanswered points to pull within two with 1:17 left.
Two free throws by Billy Robinson gave the Lancers a 66-62 advantage but a layup by SSU's Anthony Jones with 26 seconds left cut LU's lead back to two points.
Smith made a pair of free throws with 22 seconds left to seal the game.
The Tigers missed three field goal attempts in the final nine seconds.
The win gave Longwood a 13-10 record while the Tigers fell to 12-12 overall and 10-2 at Tiger Arena.
SSU, who out-rebounded Longwood 37 to 31, were led by Chris Linton who had 14 points. Raye Bailey added 12 points and seven rebounds, Jovonni Shuler chipped in 11 points and Jones had 10 points.
Longwood, who was held without a field goal the final 4:53, shot 44.2 percent from the floor for the game.
SSU opened the game scoring the first six points but Longwood put together a 11-0 run to grab a five point lead.
The Lancers led by as much as six in the opening half before Savannah State closed the period with a 10-2 run and went into the locker room with a 29-27 halftime lead.
