SSU Earns Split With Norfolk State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Matt Nowacki, Dexter Kelley and Andrew Mendez each drove in three runs to as Savannah State beat Norfolk State 16-7 in the second game of a double header at Tiger Field.

Eric Ransom pitched four innings in relief of starter Joe Jackson and earned the win. Ransom gave up one hit and struck out two batters.

Norfolk State won the opener 14-6, giving the Tigers their first loss of he young season.

In the SSU victory, The Tigers scored three runs off one hit in the first inning which included a single by Mendez which brought home two runs.

A two-run home run by Jerrod Farley was the highlight of the top of the second as NSU tied the game. In the bottom of the inning, Savannah State answered with two more runs as Nowacki drove in two runs with a single to center field.

The Spartans went ahead 6-5 in the third as Anselmo Cantu blasted a three-run home run. For SSU, Darien Campbell, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored on a single by David Washington to tie the game at 6 in the bottom half of the third.

Norfolk State took a 7-6 lead in the fourth but the Tigers scored two runs off two hits in their half of the inning as Kelly hit a RBI triple and later scored on an error by the catcher.

Savannah State (3-1) exploded for eight runs in the sixth to go ahead 16-7.

Kelly was hit by a pitch and Mendez walked to open the inning. Tristan Smith later walked to load the bases. Julius Green reached on a fielder's choice and Kelly and Mendez scored on errors. After Washington drew a base on balls, Nowacki singled to bring home Oglesby, who earlier walked. Pointer singled to right field which allowed two more runners to cross home plate. Kelly made another appearance at the plate and smacked a double to right for two more RBIs. Mendez singled to right to score Kelly for the final run of the game.

Jason Barker took the loss for NSU, despite striking out six batters.

In the first game, the Tigers made fiver errors and stranded six base runners.

NSU took an early 2-0 lead but Savannah State tied the score in the second when Smith bunted home two runs that scored Pointer and Kelley who led off the inning with back to back singles.

The Spartans added four runs in the fourth and seven more in the fifth to expand their lead to 13-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, SSU had three runners to cross the plate. Washington led off the inning with a homer. After Nowacki was hit by a pitch and Mendez flied out, Pointer hit a two-run home run to left center to make the score 13-5.

NSU left the bases juiced in the sixth but was only able to score once. The Tigers left two men on base and also was able to score once as Campbell drove in a run with a RBI double.

Pointer had two hits, scored twice and drove in two runs for SSU. Smith also drove in two runs.

Mark Sherrod took the loss. Sherrod pitched 3.2 innings and gave up six runs while striking out four.

Brandon Hairston and Chris Warren each had three RBI for the Spartans. Chase Davenport got the win on the mound, giving up seven hits and five runs.
