SSU baseball wins season opener

Savannah, Ga. – The Savannah State University baseball team defeated North Carolina Central 7-6 in its season opener at Tiger Field on Friday.

The Tigers (1-0) rallied from a 4-1 deficit scoring four runs in the fifth inning to give SSU a lead it would hold on to.

David Washington walked to lead off the inning. Jonathan Ross blasted a two-run homer over the left field scoreboard pulling the Tigers within one. With two outs, Dexter Kelley doubled then scored on a double to left field by Mendez. Mendez scored on a single by Matthew Oglesby giving SSU a 5-4 lead.

The Tigers got on the board first scoring one run in the bottom of the second. With one out Andrew Mendez doubled for SSU's first hit of the game. He advanced to third on a wild pitch then scored on a throwing error.

The Eagles (0-1) answered quickly scoring two runs in the top of the third. Justin Goodson singled to lead off the inning. He went to second on a sacrifice bunt then scored when Akeem Hood tripled to centerfield. Hood scored on error by the SSU first baseman giving the Eagles a 2-1 advantage.

NCCU added two runs in the fourth inning on Robert Landis' two-run homer that barely made it over the left field wall for a 4-1 lead.

SSU scored a run in the sixth when pinch hitter Julius Green was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on a single by Mathew Nowacki and scored on a wild pitch.

Dexter Kelley hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh increasing SSU's lead 7-4.

The Eagles pulled within one run after a double by Kurt Wilson scored two runs for NCCU in the top of the eighth.

SSU starter Michael Allegritti picked up the win for Tigers. NCCU relief pitcher James Jordan was credited with the loss.
