Creighton Stops SSU Men

OMAHA, Neb.- Creighton jumped out to a 24-6 lead and never looked back as the Bluejays won 77-62 before 15,631 fans at the Qwest Center.

After Savannah State tied the game at 2, Creighton scored 14 unanswered points.

Trailing 27-9 with 3:30 on the clock, SSU closed out the opening half with six straight points as Rod Mitchell hit a jumper followed by a pair of jumpers from Cedric Smith.

Creighton (4-5) led 27-17 at the half.

A free throw by Rashad Hassan pulled the Tigers within 11 early in the second half but a 9-2 spurt by Creighton gave the home team a 18 point edge with 17:23 left.

A 10-2 run gave the Bluejays a 57-36 advantage with 11:01 remaining but Savannah State answered with nine unanswered points to get within 12 with just under eight minutes left.

During the final seven and a half minutes, Creighton made all 14 free throw attempts to close the gate on a SSU comeback.

Darius Baugh came off the bench to shoot a career-high 23 points for the Tigers (4-7). Hassan added 14 and Preston Blackmon chipped in 11 and four assists. Smith had six points and eight rebounds.

SSU started out cold, shooting 29.2 percent in the first half but warmed up in the second period and shot a respectable 42.4 percent from the floor.

Ethan Wraggle led four Creighton players in double figures with 18 points.
