CHARLESTON, S.C.-
Rashad Hassan scored 25 points and hauled down nine rebounds to lead Savannah State to a 68-57 victory over NAIA opponent Virginia-Wise in the Skip Prosser Classic played at McAlister Field House.
Hassan hit 10 of 14 shots from the field as Savannah State improved their record at 3-3.
The Tigers shot 53.2 percent from the field and 50 percent from 3-point range. SSU won the rebounding battle 33 to 20 and held the Cavaliers to just three offensive boards.
A pair of free throws by
Glen Izevbigie gave SSU a four-point lead but Virginia-Wise went on a 14-0 run to take a 22-12 lead with 9:37 left in the first half.
The Tigers answered with 13 unanswered points to take a 25-22 lead with 5:23 remaining and led 30-27 at the half.
With the game tied at 44 with 9:34 left in the second period, Savannah State scored seven straight points as Preston Blackmon nailed a 3-pointer,
Rod Mitchell hit a jumper and Blackmon hit a jumper.
The Cavalier cut their deficit to five but SSU pushed their lead to 62-51 with 2:44 on the clock after a dunk by Hassan.
SSU made all six free throw attempts down the stretch as they built a 68-54 advantage with 90 seconds left.
Savannah State's reserves out-scored the Cavalier bench players 20-0 in the second period.
Tracy Rankins scored 15 points for Savannah State and Mitchell came off the bench to score 9 points and pull down seven rebounds.
Patrick Hardy had a game-high seven assists.
Virginia-Wise (3-5) was led by Kecev Pance who had 22 points.
