Tigers Fall to NCCU in Season Finale

DURHAM, N.C.- Savannah State had a balanced offensive attack but it was not enough as the Tigers fell to North Carolina Central 35-14 at O'Kelly-Riddick Stadium before a crowd of 4,765.

SSU had 173 passing yards and 173 rushing yards.

It was the last regular season game for both teams as the Tigers finished 2-8 and NCCU ended their campaign 4-7.

The Tigers had little success on their first drive but NCCU's Brian Frierson fumbled Derek Williams' punt at the Eagles 30 and SSU recovered.

SSU got as far as the Eagles 27 but the drive came up empty as Williams' 48 yard field goal attempt was short.

NCCU took only play to score as Michael Johnson threw a 69 yard scoring pass to Andrew Johnson for a 7-0 lead with 8:13 left in the opening quarter.

Savannah State tied the score on their next possession when Kurvin Curry capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a eight yard touchdown run with 2:48 left in the first quarter. Williams' converted the extra point.

The Eagles went ahead 14-7 early in the second quarter when Johnson threw a 12 yard touchdown pass to Will Scott.

Early in the third quarter, NCCU increased their lead to 21-7 when Johnson threw a 56 yard touchdown pass to Scott.

On their second possession of the second half, SSU cut their deficit to seven points as Curry threw a 17 yard touchdown pass to Deleon Hollinger with 4:29 remaining in the third.

Tony McCord ran for a 80 yard touchdown for the Eagles with 11:34 left in the game to make the score 28-14 and added another score as Johnson tossed a 24 yard touchdown pass to Scott with 5:37 remaining.

SSU drove to the Eagles 15 on their next possession but a fourth down pass from Curry to Hollinger fell incomplete. NCCU took over with 56 seconds left and ran out the clock.

Curry passed for 173 yards and a touchdown and ran for 81 for Savannah State. Hollinger caught eight passes for 92 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Antwan Allen and Jevontae Jefferson had seven tackles each. Allen also had the game's only interception.

Johnson passed for 233 yards and four touchdowns for NCCU. McCord ran for 98 yards and Scott caught seven balls for 120 yards and three touchdowns. Derek Harvey led the defense with 15 tackles.
