Crissa Jackson scored the final four points of the game as Savannah State opened their 2009-10 season with a 48-42 win over Edward Waters in Tiger Arena.
EWC led by six with 11:27 left but a layup by Savannah State's
Brittany Gilbert tied the score at 36 with 6:39 remaining.
SSU led by four with less than two minutes on the clock but two free throws by Ashley Hamn and a layup by Tieura Quick tied the game at 42 with 27 seconds left.
Darice Fountain's layup put SSU ahead 44-42 with 21 seconds left and Jackson hit two free throws with 10 seconds left and a layup with seven seconds on the clock, following a steal by
Raven James to seal the win.
Jackson led SSU (1-0) by scoring seven of her nine points in the first half.
Alisha Nelson scored eight points and had a game-high 13 rebounds, five blocks and four steals while
Courtney Long added six points and eight rebounds. James added six steals.
Edward Waters (2-2) had 31 turnovers and were paced by Quick's 10 points and Hamn's eight rebounds.
SSU won the rebounding battle 52 to 42.
Savannah State, which shot 28.2 percent from the floor, jumped out to a 6-1 lead before EWC rallied to take a 10-8 lead with 11:29 on the clock.
SSU grabbed their biggest lead of the contest at 20-13 with 3:25 left but Edward Waters battled back to end the half on a 10-4 spurt and went into the locker-room trailing 24-23
