Trio Leads SSU Over Webber

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Louis Arnold, Tracy Rankins and Rashad Hassan all scored in double figures to lead Savannah State to a season opening 65-51 victory over Webber International before a crowd of 1,344 at Tiger Arena.

Arnold paved the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Rankins had 12 points and Hassan added 11. Freshman Darius Baugh scored nine points.

Dating back to last season, SSU (1-0) has won four consecutive games.

SSU led 55-49 with 3:37 remaining but closed the game with a 10-2 run. Savannah State made 8-of-11 free throw attempts down the stretch while hitting 66.7 percent for the game.

The Tigers led 11-10 with 12:26 left in the opening half but went on a 14-4 run to open up a 11 point advantage with 5:25 on the clock.

Webber got within 29-26 with 43 seconds left in the half but SSU's Patrick Hardy drilled a 3-pointer to send the Tigers in the locker room with a 32-26 halftime lead.

Tyler Hoevenaar led Webber (2-2) with 12 points and eight assists.

Webber made 28 turnovers but shot 50 percent from the field in the second period.

A pair of free throws by Hoevenaar cut WIU's deficit to 37-35 with 12:11 left in the second half but a 16-4 spurt by the Tigers gave the home team a 14 point cushion with just over five minutes remaining.
