Late Run Pushes JU Over Tigers

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Leading by four points with 6:14 remaining, Jacksonville ended the game with a 15-6 run as the Dolphins defeated Savannah State 69-59 at Swisher Gymnasium before a crowd of 1,004.

The loss dropped the Tigers to 9-10 overall and 0-9 on the road.

Jacksonville improved to 9-8.

The Dolphins built a six point lead early in the game but SSU battled back to tie the contest at 11 when Rashad Hassan hit a jumper at the 13 minute mark.

JU's lead was one with under four minutes remaining but a four-point swing pushed their lead to 29-24 with 2:31 on the clock.

Trailing 31-28, junior college transfer Glen Izevbigie made a layup with 31 seconds left to send the Tigers into the half down 31-30.

SSU shot 46.2 percent from the floor in the opening frame while he Dolphins shot 42.3 percent.

Chris Linton hit a jumper to start the second half to give SSU a one point lead but JU tied the game with a free throw.

With the game tied at 32, JU went on a 10-2 run to grab a eight point lead with 14:51 remaining.

A 9-2 spurt by the Tigers got them as close as one but a 15-7 run by Jacksonville made the score 59-50 with 3:39 on the clock.

SSU would trim their deficit to seven but a 9-2 mini-run gave the Dolphins a 14 point edge with just under a minute left.

Hassan had a game-high 19 points for the Tigers while Linton, a Jacksonville native, chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds.

Ben Smith had 17 points and six assists for JU.

For the game, the Tigers made 46.9 percent of their shots while Jacksonville made 41.7 percent.

SSU was just 8-of-18 from the free throw line while the Dolphins went 22-of-27.
