Lancers Hold Off SSU

FARMVILLE, Va.- Longwood broke open a close game with a 10-1 run as the Lancers went on to beat Savannah State 86-76 in Willett Hall before a crowd of 1,327.

Ryan Bogan led four Lancers in double figures with a game-high 25 points as Longwood improved to 8-10.

In a game that featured nine lead changes and five ties, the Tigers shot 57.7 percent from the field while Longwood shot 51.7 percent from the floor.

With the score knotted at 27, Longwood broke loose with a 11-2 run to go ahead by nine with 2:35 remaining before the half.

SSU answered the Lancers run with a 9-2 spurt to pull within two with 38 seconds left but Bogan made a layup and free throw with 19 seconds left to send Longwood into the locker room with a 41-36 advantage.

Longwood expanded their lead to 11 early in the second period.

Savannah State was able to whittle away at the deficit but could get no closer than five.

Trailing by 10, a 6-0 run by the Tigers with under three minutes left pull them within four, 77-73.

However, Longwood ended the contest holding SSU (9-9) to just one field goal the final three minutes to seal the win.

Anthony Jones paced Savannah State with 21 points. Tracy Rankins added 12 and Jovonni Shuler chipped in 11.
