Williams, Studdard Leads SSU Past Concordia

SAVANNAH,Ga- Derek Williams kicked three field goals and Daniel Studdard scored two touchdowns to lead Savannah State to a 23-7 Homecoming victory over Concordia at Theodore A.Wright Stadium.

The crowd of 9,217 saw the Tigers take a 6-0 lead into the half as Williams kicked a 27-yard field goal with 5:19 left in the first quarter and added a 26-yarder with 8:44 left in the second quarter.

The Hornets put together a 10-play, 70-yard drive in the third quarter and took a 7-6 lead on A.J. Ward's seven-yard run with 9:08 left in the quarter. John Halman's extra point kick was good.

SSU scored 17-unanswered points in the final quarter to put Concordia away.

Williams booted a 24-yard field goal, his third of the afternoon with 14:55 left in the game to put the Tigers ahead 9-7.

Studdard's scored on a three-yard run with 5:25 remaining and then added another three-yard scamper with 1:48 on the clock. Williams kicked both extra points.

SSU compiled 358 yards of offense while holding the Hornets to 173.

The Tigers had 24 first downs while limiting Concordia to eight.

Savannah State's defense had three sacks and three interceptions.

Concordia (5-5) was penalized 15 times for 123 yards while SSU drew 14 penalties for 83 yards.

Justin Babb rushed 19 times for 164 yards and Deleon Hollinger caught six passes for 67 yards. JaCorey Kilcrease came off the bench for a injured Kurvin Curry and completed 9-of-11 passes for 58 yards. Curry was 4-of-8 for 44 yards.

Defensively, Calvin Leonard had nine tackles and an interception. Darren Hunter and Richie Rucker also had an interception each.

Ward rushed for 43-yards for the Hornets while Ken Johnson threw for 57 yards. Halman caught two passes for 33-yards and Sherman Black had 10 tackles.

SSU, who broke a two-game losing skid, improved to 4-5. The Tigers will play Edward Waters on November 8 at Gilman Stadium in St. Mary's, Georgia. Kickoff is at 5:00 p.m.
