Derek Williams' 37-yard field goal with 1:09 left turned out to be the game-winner as Savannah State defeated Clark Atlanta 17-14 at Panther Stadium.
The crowd of 17,893 saw Williams hit a 27-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter to tie the game at 14.
The Tigers snapped a four-game winning streak by Clark Atlanta and spoiled the Panthers homecoming celebration.
CAU had a chance to send the game into overtime but Henry Boynton missed a 37-yard field goal attempt with seven seconds remaining.
The Panthers took an early 3-0 lead when Boynton nailed a 26-yard field goal with 11:49 left in the first quarter.
On the next CAU possession, Savannah State safety Javorris Jackson intercepted a pass and returned it 19 yards to the CAU 42. However the Tigers' offense sputtered and had to punt the ball.
Early in the second quarter SSU's defense had the Panthers pinned at their own five after a 30-yard punt by Williams.
Not to be phased, CAU engineered a 13-play, 95 yard drive that ended in a one-yard quarterback sneak by Cedric Johnson. CAU made the two-point conversion as Johnson passed the ball to Dashaun Johnson for a 11-0 advantage with 4:29 remaining.
Savannah State answered CAU as they took the kickoff and drove for a score as Deron Talley caught a 33-yard pass from Kurvin Curry with one hand in the end zone with 1:04 on the clock. Chris Bush caught the two-point conversion from Curry and SSU trailed 11-8. Key plays on the 10-play, 44 yard-drive was a 10-yard run by Justin Babb and catches of 29 and 10 yards by receiver Deleon Hollinger.
Fired up from their late surge in the first half, SSU started the third quarter with a 56-yard drive that resulted in Williams booting a 32-yard field goal with 10:13 to tie the game at 11.
On their next possession CAU went ahead 14-11 on Boynton's 35-yard field goal with 5:08 left in the quarter.
SSU tied the game with 14:55 left in the fourth quarter.
Clark Atlanta drove to the Tiger's 13 on their next possession but Boynton's 33-yard field goal was blocked by Jackson and recovered by Marcus Darrisaw near the end zone.
