ITTA BENA, Ms- Paul Roberts threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Paul Cox with five seconds left to give Mississippi Valley State a come-from-behind 22-20 win over Savannah State.
The win broke a four-game losing streak for the Delta Devils and improved their record to 2-4.
MVSU entered the fourth quarter trailing by four points but went ahead 16-13 with 7:43 remaining when Roberts scored on a one-yard run to cap a 71-yard drive.
The Tigers intercepted a Roberts pass with just over three minutes left and returned it to the MVSU 30. From there it took SSU seven plays to score as Kurvin Curry threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Deleon Hollinger with 36 seconds on the clock to give SSU a 20-16 lead.
The Delta Devils took the kickoff and marched 58 yards in four plays as Roberts tossed the game-winning score to Cox with five seconds left.
SSU (3-5) scored on their first possession of the game when Derek Williams kicked a 24-yard field goal with 9:11 left in the first quarter.
MVSU answered SSU and took a 6-3 lead when Roberts threw a 18-yard scoring pass to Cox with 7:08 left in the first quarter. Zack Gilarski missed the extra point.
With 1:50 left in the quarter, Gilarski nailed a 39-yard field goal to give the Delta Devils a 9-3 advantage.
The Tigers took a 13-9 lead into the half with 10 points in the second quarter. Rashard Russell scored on a eight-yard run with 12:01 left and with 25 second remaining Williams kicked a 23 yard filed goal.
Both of SSU's field goals came after drives stalled at the Mississippi Valley State seven-yard line.
The MVSU homecoming crowd of 7,654 at Rice-Totten Stadium saw SSU out-gain the Delta Devils 357 to 304.
Curry passed for 173 yards and a touchdown for SSU. He also ran for 79 yards. Justin Babb added 59 rushing yards and Russell contributed 42 and a touchdown. Chris Bush caught six passes for 50 yards and Hollinger hauled in five catches for 42 yards and a score. Defensively, Calvin Leonard had a game-high 13 tackles.
Bradford Blue led the MVSU defense with 11 tackles. Roberts had 252 passing yards and accounted for three touchdowns but he was also sacked three times and threw two interceptions. Cox caught six passes for 84 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
SSU will not play on October 25 but return to action on November 1 when they host Concordia-Selma for Homecoming.
