Roselidah Obunaga enters her eighth year as head volleyball coach at Savannah State University.
Obunaga looks to build off of a record setting 2024 season which saw the Lady Tigers finish with a program record 15-9 campaign a second place finish in the SIAC East Division, and a berth in the SIAC Women's Volleyball Tournament advancing to the semifinal round before falling short to eventual conference champion, Spring Hill.
Obunaga served as the interim head coach for the 2019 season. In their first year of competition within the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Obunaga’s Lady Tigers earned six conference wins, enough to make the SIAC Championship as the No. 4 seed from the East Division.
They finished the 2019 season 9-18 overall, a vast improvement on the previous year's 3-21 record. The nine wins were the most in program history since the 2009 season finished 11-19.
Obunaga was officially named the head coach in February of 2020.
Following the cancelation of the 2020 season due to the pandemic, Obunaga and the Lady Tigers earned another SIAC Championship appearance with a 6-9 SIAC record in 2021. They finished the season 10-15 overall.
Obunaga came from Montana State University Northern two seasons. Her coaching career began as a graduate assistant at the University of Evansville in Indiana. She then went on to volunteer at Washington University in St. Louis, Mo.
In 2012, she became a coach at Stephens College in Columbia, Mo. She started with a team of seven players. By 2014, she successfully added a junior varsity program of eight players, and guided the varsity program to a 13-17 season finish.
The 13 wins marked the most single season wins since 2010. They also went 5-7 in the American Midwest Conference, which earned them a berth to the AMC Championship.
In addition to college coaching, she has also coached club teams in Indiana, West Plains, St Louis and Columbia, Missouri. She also volunteered with USAV high performance. She recently coached the Girls Future Select team for the 2019 Continental Championships in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
A native of Kakamega, Kenya, Obunaga is a two-time Olympian athlete. She competed in the 2000 Sydney and 2004 Athens Olympics as a member of the Kenyan National Women’s Volleyball Team. She also competed in several African championships.
She earned a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration with a minor in Communication at Columbia College and a master’s degree in Public Service Administration at University of Evansville in Indiana.
She is married to Philip Omunga and they have a daughter named Yonne.
