Malik Jones enters his third year as the head volleyball coach at Savannah State University. He acquired the position after spending a year as the assistant volleyball and women’s basketball coach for SSU. As head coach ,Jones has been instrumental in leading the volleyball team to the most wins in the programs entire history. As an assistant, he lead the Lady Tigers to four straight wins at the Paine College Invitational tournament. During that span, SSU defeated Paine College 3-1, Tuskegee University 3-0, Voorhees College 3-0, and Stillman College 3-2. It marked the first time SSU won consecutive games since 1998.
Jones, a native of Fort Smith, Arkansas, graduated from Texas College in 2007 with a degree in Biology/Pre-Med. While at TC, Jones was the assistant volleyball coach in charge of strength and conditioning, as well as the assistant men’s basketball coach. Prior to that, he spent two years as the assistant women’s basketball coach.
Before matriculating to TC, Jones attended the University of Central Arkansas where he was a starter at running back, wide receiver, and a return specialist before ending his career due to a shoulder injury.
A stellar high school football player, Jones was named to the USA Today Honorable Mention All-American Team and selected to the All-State team in 1998. In addition, He received the West Region 5-A Player of the Year award, and was the runner up for state player of the year. Jones ended his prep career as the second leading rusher in school history, and the third leading rusher in region history.
He is single, and resides in Savannah, Georgia.
