Joseph Flegler enters his fourth season as assistant men’s basketball coach at Savannah State University.
Flegler came to SSU from Thomas University in Thomasville, Georgia where he served as assistant men’s basketball coach from 2012-14. At Thomas, he helped re-start a program that had been dormant for two decades. By the end of their first full season, the team posted an 18-13 record and made it to the semifinals of The Sun Conference Tournament.
Before that, Flegler worked at O.C.I.S. (Out of the City into School) and Hoop Life. He did undergraduate internships at Emergency Management Agency, Department of Veteran Affairs and the Washington Hospital Center.
As a student-athlete, Flegler played three years for the Tigers as a point guard. He was one of the pieces head coach Horace Broadnax used to rebuild the program.
The year before Flegler arrived at SSU, the team went 0-28. By the time Flegler was a senior, the Tigers went 15-14; the programs first winning season since 1985-86.
The Washington, D.C. native played one season at College of Southern Maryland, before transferring to SSU where, in 2005, he was selected to the All-MDJUCO Team and the All-Region Team.
While playing for the Tigers (2005-08), Flegler played in 91 games, scored 874 points, had 101 steals, 212 assists and 165 rebounds. For a career, he averaged 9.6 points, 1.11 steals, 2.33 assists and 1.81 rebounds per game. His efforts on the court resulted in him being named the team MVP his senior season as well as to the Division I All-Independent Team
Following his college playing career, Flegler played professionally in the Eastern Basketball Alliance (Nova Hawks), Continental Basketball League (Savannah Wildcats), National Basketball League of Canada (Quebec Kebs), Latin Basketball League (Peru) and the Atlantic Coast Professional Basketball League (Beltway Bombers).
Flegler graduated from Savannah State in 2010 with a bachelor degree in criminal justice with a minor in mass communications. He is currently pursuing a master of business administration degree from Thomas University.
