Gibbons enters his ninth season with the Tiger’s men’s basketball program. His primary roles as an assistant is recruiting, practice management, scouting, and individual workouts.
As the head recruiting coach, Gibbons was instrumental in recruiting players that led the men’s basketball team to the 2011-12 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Regular Season Championship. It was the first MEAC Championship in school history. In 2006-07, he helped guide the team to a 12-18 turnaround season. The following year the Tigers improved again with a 13-18 finish.season. The 13 wins set a record for the most wins in Division I school history and was the most wins in 12 years for SSU.
While at SSU, Gibbons has taken a leadership role in reinstating the SSU summer basketball camps that had been dormant for years. The summer camps are geared to teaching young players basic fundamentals and skills in order to be successful players.
Gibbons came to SSU from Georgia Southwestern State University where he served as an assistant coach for two seasons. At GSW, Gibbons served as the recruiting coordinator and assisted in player development. He assisted the GSW Hurricanes to a 2004 NAIA National Tournament appearance. He also coordinated the GSW players’ individual workouts and community service involvement. During his two-year tenure, GSW finished fourth and second in the conference posting 17 and 22 win seasons, respectively.
Gibbons began his playing career playing under his father, legendary coach Gordon Gibbons, at Florida Southern College in Lakeland, (Fla.). A four-year letterman at the point guard position, he led the team in assists, and helped FSC advance to the Division II Final Four, Elite Eight and in his junior season a first place national ranking. In his senior year, Gibbons transferred to Clayton State University where he helped the Lakers win there first and only Peach Belt Conference title in 2002.
The Lakeland, Fla., native received his bachelor’s degree in Integrated Studies from Clayton State University in 2003. He is currently single and resides in Savannah, Ga.
