Savannah State University Athletics

Nate Baker

Nate Baker was hired as the co-offensive coordinator/tackles and tight ends coach at Savannah State in 2019 and helped lead one of the most successful offensives in school history.

The 2019 Tigers posted an historic 7-3 overall record—the first winning schedule since 1998. In the program’s first year of competition back in NCAA Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), the Tigers recorded an incredible 5-0 conference record.

The Tiger’s offense under Baker’s leadership—showcasing an old-school option offense—set new school records in a number of categories during the 2019 season.

But winning is nothing new to Baker. Over the course of his career, his teams have posted winning season after winning season, setting records and making history.

Baker began his coaching career at Georgia Southern University in 2008 as an undergraduate analysist for running backs, quarterbacks, offensive linemen, and cornerbacks. From 2013-2015, Baker was the offensive graduate assistant at Georgia Southern University.

During his time at Georgia Southern, he appeared in the FCS semifinals, won three conference championships in the Sun Belt, earned the school’s first win against an FBS team, beating the University of Florida, coached an offense that led the country in rushing for five consecutive season and won the school’s first bowl game.

Georgia Southern had winning seasons in 2014 (9-3) and 2015 (8-4). In the 2014 season the Eagles averaged 488 yards per game, 381 RPG, and 55 rushing touchdowns. In the following year when GSU went 8-4, the Eagles offense averaged 35 points per game, RPG and 47 rushing touchdowns.

Baker was hired as the offensive line coach at Georgia Military College in 2016. In his first season, Baker signed out four offensive linemen to NCAA Division I programs—South Carolina, Coastal Carolina, Troy and Alabama State.

In his second season in 2017, he finished with a record of 8-2 and coached two NJCAA All-American offensive linemen. In his final season at GMC in 2018 he sent four more athletes to NCAA Division I programs. The bulldogs averaged over 35 points per game, 350+ yards per game, and over 30 rushing touchdowns.
