John W. Montgomery II begins his first year as the assistant head coach/offensive line coach for Savannah State University. Montgomery, who served as the running backs coach at Benedict last year, has previously served at Morehouse, Cincinnati, Alabama A&M, Langston, Southern University, UNLV, Texas A&M, Pittsburgh, Howard, Wichita State and Oklahoma State.
The 26 year coaching veteran got his first coaching job at the age of 22 with Alabama A&M University in 1978. He served three years as the linebackers coach before landing a job at Wichita under the legendary Willie Jefferies. Under Jeffries, Montgomery moved to the offensive end and began coaching running backs. In 1984, Montgomery went with Coach Jeffries to Howard University as the offensive coordinator and running backs coach.
In 1987, Montgomery went to the University of Nevada-Las Vegas and coached running backs. While there, he coached the 1987 Division I-A leading rusher and the 31st selection in the 1988 draft, Elbert (Ickey) Woods (Cincinnati Bengals).
After taking a two year break from coaching, Montgomery landed the offensive coordinator position at Langston University. He helped turn the program around from a 2-9 campaign in 1991, to 9-2 and a NAIA playoff appearance in 1993.
From 1994 to 1997, Montgomery coached at three different institutions, first, as offensive coordinator for Reggie Oliver and Ken Pettiford at AAMU, then at Cincinnati under Rick Minter, and finally at Morehouse as the offensive coordinator under Doug Williams, before leaving the coaching ranks in 1998.
In 2001, after a four year hiatus, Montgomery returned to Langston University, this time as the athletics director.
Montgomery, a Poteau, Oklahoma native, graduated from Oklahoma State in 1976 with a degree in sociology. He is a member of the Langston University Upsilon Iota Alumni Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. He and his wife of 16 years, Andrea, have three children; John III, Elliot, and Mildren.
