ALBANY, Ga.- Savannah State lost their first conference games of the season, following a double header setback to Albany State on Saturday afternoon.
SSU dropped the first game 7-6 and fell in the second contest 2-1.
Savannah State trailed 7-2 in the first game before scoring four runs in the final two innings to make it a one run game.
The Lady Tigers entered the third inning of the opening game down 4-0 but an RBI double by
Ansley Hudson got SSU on the scoreboard. ASU answered with a run in the bottom of the third for a 5-1 lead.
An RBI single by
Phaedra Smith in the top of the fourth drew SSU within 5-2 but the Golden Rams went ahead 7-2 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Following walks to
Jayla Alexander and Smith in the fifth, Hudson hit a single that sent Alexander home while Smith scored on a wild pitch to cut the Albany State lead to 7-4.
Ambria Guye was hit by a pitch to start the stop of the seventh, advanced to second on a single by
Madison Starling-Martin.
Neveah Ford entered the game as a pinch runner for Guye and back-to-back singles by
Jayla Alexander and
Jayla Givens sent Ford and Starling-Martin home for a one run game.
The next two SSU batters grounded out and fouled out to end the game.
Hudson finished the game with two hits and two RBI, Alexander had two hits and Smith scored twice.
Ariana Battle took the loss on the mound.
The second game was a defensive battle. Although Savannah State collected six hits, they only scored one run.
SSU scored their lone run in the first inning as
Kaitlyn Williams singled and scored on a single by Starling-Martin for a 1-0 lead.
Albany State scored both of their runs in the fourth inning.
Battle had a double and a single for Savannah State and stole one base.
Donnea Allen, who pitched a three-hitter and struck out four, was tagged with the loss.
Savannah State (13-5, 4-2 SIAC) will head to the SIAC Crossover on March 10-12 in Birmingham, Alabama.
