SAVANNAH, Ga.-
Jordan Mikell scored a season-high 21 points to lead Savannah State to a 69-60 win over a scrappy Spring Hill team in Tiger Arena on Saturday afternoon.
The Jacksonville, Florida native made 7-of-9 shots from the field and all seven of his free throw attempts. He also had two rebounds and two blocks.
Ahead 61-60 with 48 seconds remaining, the Tigers finished the game making all eight of their free throw attempts with
Javonte Landy and
Zyere Edwards making two each and Mikell making four.
The win gives Savannah State a 12-9 overall record and a 12-7 SIAC record.
Spring Hill jumped out to a 7-2 lead but the Tigers strung together a 6-0 spurt to take a slim 8-7 lead.
With the score knotted at 18, SSU went on a 14-6 run to take a 32-24 advantage with 4:32 showing on the clock.
The Badgers finished the first period with a 10-4 run and went into half trailing Savannah State 36-34.
A
Brandon Johnson layup to start the second half put SSU ahead 38-34 but consecutive 3-pointers by the visitors from Mobile, Alabama put them in front 40-38 with 16:58 left.
The teams continued to trade scores and the game was tied at 50 with 10:53 remaining and again at 52 with 7:35 left but SSU broke the tie with a 3-pointer by Edwards and a layup by Leach for a 57-52 advantage at the 5:52 mark.
The SSU lead grew to 61-55 with 1:48 left, following a layup by Mikell but Spring Hill answered with five straight points to cut the Tigers lead to 61-60 with 48 seconds left.
Savannah State finished the day with 16 points off turnovers, 10 second chance points, 25 points from the bench an 32 points in the paint.
Landy had 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals for the Tigers and Edwards contributed nine points and six assists.
Leach added eight points, seven rebounds and three blocks while
Zion Davis also had eight points.
Chancellor Wilson had six points and five rebounds while Johnson and
Braylon Jackson scored two points apiece.
Savannah State will host Edward Waters on February 14 at 4 p.m.
