SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State opened their 2026 softball season by sweeping a twin-bill from visiting Voorhees at the SSU Softball Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lady Tigers posted a 11-0 shutout in the opener and completed the sweep with a 12-4 win in the second game.
Savannah State rode the arm of
Donnea Allen in the first game as she threw a one-hitter and struck out ten batters. At the plate, Allen,
Ambria Guye,
Madison Starling-Martin and
Ariana Battle all hit doubles.
Ansley Hudson led off the bottom of the first inning with a single and scored on a double by Guye. Two batters later,
Kaitlyn Williams' single to the second baseman allowed Guye to cross home plate for a 2-0 lead.
Neveah Ford led off the next inning with a single and scored on a single by Hudson to increase the SSU lead to 3-0.
SSU scored six runs off five hits in the third inning.
Guye was hit by a hit while Williams and
Zorianna Ford hit singles to load the bases for
Neveah Ford who hit a single up the middle to score Guye and Williams. A double by Allen would bring home
Zorianna Ford.
Jayla Givens entered thee game to pinch run for Allen and scored along with
Neveah Ford on a double by Battle. Hudson reached base thanks to an error by the shortstop and that allowed Hudson to score for a 9-0 advantage.
The fourth inning saw the Lady Tigers collect three hits and score two more times.
Madison Starling-Martin hit a double and
Neveah Ford singled to put runners at the corners. After Starling-Martin stole home, a single up the middle allowed
Neveah Ford to score the final run of the contest.
Neveah Ford went 3-for-3 at the plate with three runs and two RBI while Allen and Hudson had two hits and two RBI each. Guye scored twice and Allen had two RBI.
In the second contest, SSU scored a dozen runs off 16 hits.
Guye hit a RBI single in the first inning and scored on a fielder's choice by Williams for a 2-0 lead.
Voorhees scored a run in the top of the second inning but SSU responded with three runs with Guye hitting a two-run double and
Kennedy Alsbrook hitting a RBI single to increase their lead to 5-1. A solo home run by Givens in the third inning put Savannah State ahead 6-1.
After Voorhees added two runs in the top of the fourth, the Lady Tigers responded with six runs and six hits.
SSU loaded the bases with Guye hitting a single, Alsbrook reached base on a error and Williams bunting her way on base. Guye scored on a error and Givens hit a double to center field that scored
Morgan Cole, who was running for Alsbrook, and Williams. Battle pinch ran for Givens and scored on a single by
Phaedra Smith. Following a single by
Carissa Ball, Hudson doubled to center field that scored Smith and Ball for a 12-3 cushion.
Voorhees scored the final run of the game in the top of the fifth.
Hudson went 4-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two runs, two RBI and two stolen bases while Guye was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Givens was 2-for-3 with three RBI and a run while Smith scored twice.
Aaliyah Martin was the winning pitcher. Martin pitched all five innings and gave up nine hits, four runs and one walk while recording two strikeouts.
Savannah State (2-0) will travel to Americus to battle Georgia Southwestern for a non-conference doubleheader on February 7th.
