AMERICUS, Ga.- Savannah State suffered their first setbacks on the young season following a double-header loss to Georgia Southwestern State on Saturday at the Lady Canes' Softball Field by scores of 13-4 and 9-1.
Ansley Hudson scored a run in the top of the first in the opening game, thanks to a throwing error by the GSW catcher but the Hurricanes scored seven times in the bottom half of the inning for a 7-1 lead.
In the top of the third inning,
Milani Dunning on a sacrifice fly by
Shamiya Raines and a single by
Donnea Allen allowed
Ambria Guye to cross home plate to make the score 7-3.
The Hurricanes scored five runs in the fifth and increased their lead to 13-3 with a run in the fourth.
In the top of the fifth
Kaitlyn Williams reached base on an error and scored on a ground-out by Allen for the final run of the game.
Allen, who had two RBI at the plate, took the loss on the mound.
The second game was scoreless until GSW scored four times in the third and fourth innings for a 8-0 advantage.
The Lady Tigers scored their only run in the top of the fifth when
Phaedra Smith scored on a single by Dunning.
Georgia Southwestern State added a run in the bottom of the inning for the final score of the day.
Aaliyah Martin and
Ariana Battle split time on the mound for SSU. Martin earned the start and went four innings while battle pitched the final one-third inning.
Savannah State (2-2) will host Paine in a double-header on February 10.
