Savannah State Completes Series Sweep Of Kentucky State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- A day after winning a double header with a pair of one-run games, Savannah State broke out the bats and the brooms on Monday morning in their 15-5 win over Kentucky State at Tiger Field.

The victory completed a three-game sweep over the Thorobreds as Savannah State, who had 13 hits, won their seventh game in a row. SSU also stayed unbeaten in the SIAC as they improved to 6-0 in conference play.

KSU scored a run in the top of the first inning and Savannah State answered with a run in the bottom of the second with Jayden Clark hitting a RBI single that scored Jason Ramos.

The Thorobreds went ahead 2-1 in the top of the third but the lead was short lived as Savannah State scored six times in their turn at the plate.

Tyler Tucker reached base on an error, Hakem Smith singled and Ramos drew a walk to load the bases for Gavin Jusino who was hit by a pitch which allowed Tucker to score. A single by Kijani Clarington brought home Smith and Ramos. A walk to Seth Stargell loaded the bases for Johan Sandoval who cleared the bases with his triple to right field for a 7-2 lead.

Tucker and Ramos scored runs in the fourth but Kentucky State added three runs off two hits in the top of the fifth to cut the SSU lead to 9-5.

Clark led off the bottom of the fifth with a walk and Stargell was hit by a pitch. Both scored runs with Clark scoring on a ground out by Sandoval and Stargell scoring on a ground out by Chandler Hicks.

Savannah State closed out the scoring with a run in the sixth and three more in the seventh.

Clarington hit a RBI triple that scored Ramos in the sixth while in the bottom of the seventh, Sandoval scored on a single by Hicks, a single by Tucker scored Hicks and a single by Jusino allowed Tucker to cross  home plate.

Sandoval ended the day with four RBI while Jusino and Clarington both had three RBI. Ramos scored four times, Tucker scored three runs and Stargell scored twice.

Sandoval, Smith, Ramos, Jusino and Clarington all had two hits apiece.

Evan Coartney was the winning pitcher while Yan Cartaya earned the save. Coartney pitched 4.1 innings and gave up five runs while striking out four. Cartaya threw for 2.2 innings and allowed one hit and struck out nje.

Savannah State will look to improve its 8-5 record when they host Tampa, the top ranked team in Division II, on Feb. 24 at Tiger Field at 2 p.m.
