SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State led Miles 49-45 after three quarters of play but the Lady Tigers offense went cold in the fourth quarter as they were outscored 18-2 in a 63-51 loss to Miles on Friday afternoon in Tiger Arena.
During the fourth quarter, SSU went 1-for-14 from the field and 0-4 from beyond the arc.
Late in the third quarter with the game tied at 45, SSU finished the final 2:40 with two free throws apiece from Saniyah Rice and
Sanai Chisholm to take a 49-45 advantage into the final ten minutes of play.
Miles began the fourth quarter with a 14-0 run to go ahead 59-49 with 1:55 remaining.
A
Jazmin Thornton layup with 1:42 left in the game were Savannah State's only points of the fourth quarter.
Following Thornton's layup, the Golden Bears ended the contest with the final four points.
With 3:20 left in the first quarter, the Lady Tigers trailed 16-7 but rallied to end the quarter with a 10-2 spurt to close their deficit to 18-17.
Miles increased their lead to 27-20 in the second quarter before SSU was able to tie the score at 28 with one minute left. A layup by Miles with eight seconds left sent the visitors from Alabama into the half with a 30-28 lead.
The third quarter featured five ties.
With the game knotted at 41, Savannah State scored the next four points with
Jayden Boykin hitting a jumper and Rice scoring on a layup for a 45-41 lead.
Miles tied the game at 45 with 2:40 left before SSU finished the quarter with four made free throws.
Jaliyah Harper had 13 points, six rebounds and four steals for Savannah State while Boykin added 11 points, four steals, four rebounds and three assists.
Thornton scored seven points and
Makaila Johnson scored six while Chisholm, Rice and
Raven Birt all added four points.
Haylee Malcum chipped in two points.
Savannah State closes the first half of the season with a 6-4 overall record and a 5-4 record in the SIAC.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action on January 8 by hosting Fort Valley State at 5:30 p.m.
