COLUMBIA, S.C-. Coming off of a game where it was 14 ties and 12 lead changes, Savannah State found themselves in another tight battle against Allen on Monday night but prevailed against the Yellow Jackets in Adams Gymnasium, 67-65.
While the game only had three ties and three lead changes, neither team led by double figures.
SSU led by seven with just under five minutes remaining in the game but a 8-0 swing by the Yellow Jackets put Allen in front 61-60.
A free throw by
Ladarrius Chigano tied the game at 61 and a dunk and a layup by
James Leach put the Tigers up 65-61 with 11 seconds left.
The teams traded free throws and SSU was ahead 67-62 until Allen hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.
Leach sparked the Savannah State offense with a double-double of 15 rebounds and 13 points to go with his two blocks and one steal.
The first twenty minutes of action was just as intense as they second half.
Allen scored the first seven points of the evening until
Zion Davis knocked down a 3-pointer with just under 16 minutes left.
The Tigers were able to get within one on several trips down the court but Allen always had an answer.
With less than two minutes left in the first period and the Yellow Jackets leading 33-28, SSU used a 3-pointer from Davis and a layup by
Chancellor Wilson to tie the score at 33 as they headed into the half.
The score was tied at 40 with 14:29 remaining in the second half when Savannah State strung together a 9-0 run to go ahead 49-40.
SSU saw their nine-point lead whittled down to 53-51 before Allen rallied to take a short-lived 61-60 lead.
The Tigers finished the game with 15 second chance points, 36 points from the bench and 28 points in the paint.
Savannah State also had a 45 to 26 rebounding edge.
Davis added 15 points, six rebounds and two steals for SSU while
Brandon Johnson had a season-best 11 points off the bench.
Wilson scored seven points as did
Michael Swift who also added nine rebounds and six assists.
Javonte Landy finished with six points, six rebounds and four assists while
Micah Johnson had five and Chigano scored three.
Savannah State (13-10, 13-8 SIAC) will travel to Tuskegee on February 19.
