Tigers Fall Late In Home Matchup Against Edward Waters

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State has played Edward Waters twice this season and both contests were close.

Savannah State pulled out a 69-63 win in Jacksonville, Florida on January 17 and in the latest Battle of I-95, Edward Waters slipped past SSU 59-55 on Saturday afternoon in Tiger Arena.

The game featured 14 ties and a dozen lead changes.

The contest was tied at 48 with 3:21 remaining when Edward Waters scored the next six points to go ahead 54-48 with 2:01 showing on the clock.

A dunk by James Leach drew SSU within four but Edward Waters answered with a free throw to make the score 55-50 with 42 seconds left.

Two free throws by Javonte Landy cut the EWU lead to 55-52 but Edward Waters made four free throws down the stretch to increase their lead to 59-52 before Michael Swift hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer.

The opening half had seven ties and no team lead by more than four points. Edward Waters led 14-10 with 8:43 left in the half while Savannah State held a 26-22 edge with 2:13remaining, following a layup by Zyere Edwards.

EWU held Savannah State scoreless the remainder of the half as they closed the period with three free throws to cut SSU's lead to 26-25 as they went into intermission.

The game remained tight in the second half as well.

A jumper by Chancellor Wilson gave the Tigers their largest lead of the night at 34-39 with 13:18 left.

With the game tied at 47, a free throw by Edwards put SSU ahead 48-47 until a pair of free throw by Edward Waters gave the visitors from Jacksonville, Florida a 49-48 lead that they would not relinquish.

Landy entered the game averaging 12.4 points a night but was held to just four points as he shot 1-for-8 from the field while missing all three of his 3-point attempts, before fouling out.

Zion Davis came off the bench to spark SSU's offense with 13 points followed by Edwards who had 12 and Michael Swift, who scored 11 and had four steals.

Jordan Mikell added eight points, seven rebounds and two blocks while Wilson scored four points. Leach ended the night with three points and a game-high nine rebounds.

Landy and fellow seniors Brandon Johnson and Ladarrius Chigano were honored before the game for Senior Night.

Savannah State (12-10, 12-8 SIAC) will travel to Allen on February 17.
