Lady Tigers Dominate Paine In Home Doubleheader Sweep

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State swept a double-header over Paine on Tuesday afternoon at the SSU Softball Field with scores of 5-0 and 19-4.

The Lady Tigers pounded out 27 hits on the day with a dozen in the opener and 15 more in the nightcap.

In the first game, Donnea Allen tossed a two-hitter and struck out seven batters.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when SSU scored twice.

Allen led off with a single, stole second and advanced to third on a bunt by Ansley Hudson. A wild pitch allowed Allen to score while Hudson advanced to second and a single to center field by Milani Dunning brought home Hudson for a 2-0 lead.

The Lady Tigers added three more runs in the sixth.

Phaedra Smith smacked a triple to right field and scored on a single to left field by Neveah Ford. A single by Hudson brought home Ford and a single by Dunning allowed Hudson to cross home plate.

Hudson had a pair of hits and scored twice, Dunning collected three hits and two RBI and Ford chipped in two hits.

In the bottom of the first inning of the second game, Dunning drew a walk and later scored on a passed ball for a  1-0 advantage.

Jayla Alexander reached base on a fielder's choice in the second inning and scored on a triple by Shamiya Raines. A sacrifice fly by Carissa Ball allowed Raines to cross home plate for a 3-0 margin.

Paine was able to send a pair of runners across home plate in the top of the third inning but SSU broke the game open in the bottom half of the inning by scoring ten runs off eight hits for a 13-2 cushion.

Kennedy Alsbrok hit a two-run double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alexander. Raines hit a RBI double and scored on a double by Ball. Dunning hit a two-run triple and scored on a wild pitch while Morgan Cole and Smith both had RBI singles in the inning.

Savannah State increased their lead to 19-2 in the fourth with six more runs as Ball doubled and scored on a fly-out by Ambria Guye. A bases load walk to Kaitlyn Williams brought home a run while Smith hit a two-run single and scored on a single by Alexander.

The Lions scored two runs in the top of the fifth for the final runs of the day.

Ariana Battle and Aaliyah Martin combined to limit Paine to six hits in the game. Battle pitched three innings and struck out two batters while Martin finished the final two innings of the contest.

Smith went 3-for-4 at the plate and had three RBI. Raines and Ball both had two hits, two RBI and scored twice while Hudson had two hits and scored twice. Dunning scored four times and had two RBI, Guye and Williams scored twice and Alexander drove in two runs.

Savannah State (4-2) will continue their non-conference schedule with a trip to Charlotte, North Carolina to play Johnson C. Smith in a double-header on February 14.
