OAKLAND PARK, Fla.- Savannah State ended their three-game series against Fort Lauderdale with a 11-3 loss on Sunday afternoon at Davis Field.
The non-conference loss drops the Tigers to 1-2 on the young season.
The Eagles used strong pitching to hold SSU to just three hits on the day.
Savannah State scored twice in the top of the first inning for a 2-0 lead before Fort Lauderdale answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Two more runs in the second inning gave the Eagles a 3-2 advantage.
Fort Lauderdale added three runs in the fifth and after a scoreless sixth inning, they sent four runners across the plate in the seventh inning for a 10-2 lead.
Another run for the Eagles in the bottom of the eighth gave them a 11-2 cushion.
Savannah State scored the final run of the contest in the top of the ninth to make the score 11-3.
Yan Cartaya hit a solo home run for the Tigers and
Bryce Bause added a double.Â
Austin McCormack took the loss on the mound for SSU. McCormack earned the start and in his six innings he gave up 11 hits, six runs and a walk while recording one strikeout.
AJ Finkley pitched one inning and surrendered four hits, four runs and one walk while striking out two while
Giovante Tomlins gave up two hits and one run with two strikeouts in his one inning of work.
The Tigers will play their home opener on February 6 with a double-header against Illinois Springfield at 12 noon and 4 p.m.
