WILBERFORCE, Ohio — Savannah State University women's volleyball closed out Friday's action at the SIAC Crossover II with a straight-set victory over LeMoyne-Owen College, defeating the Magicians 3-0 Friday evening inside Beacom/Lewis Gymnasium.
The Lady Tigers took the match by scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-22, improving to 4-11 overall and 3-5 in SIAC play.
Savannah State finished the match with 37 kills while hitting .238 as a team. The Lady Tigers also registered 11 service aces, 43 digs and four total blocks. LeMoyne-Owen was held to a .146 hitting percentage with 32 kills.
Kayden Lawrence led Savannah State's attack with an efficient performance, recording a match-high 11 kills on 21 attempts with just one error for a .476 hitting percentage. Lawrence also added a service ace and finished with a team-high 12 points.
Amiyah Walker turned in an all-around performance for the Lady Tigers with 17 assists, 15 digs, three service aces and three kills. Walker committed no attack errors on four attempts, hitting .750 for the match.
Faith Woods and
Anaya Yates each contributed six kills. Woods added a match-high four service aces, while Yates finished with a solo block and a block assist.
Kacie McLendon-Johnson added four kills without an error on 10 attempts, hitting .400.
Savannah State came out firing offensively in the opening set, totaling 15 kills against only two errors for a .382 hitting percentage. The teams battled through a tightly contested frame that featured 12 ties and eight lead changes.
With the score tied at 22, McLendon-Johnson put Savannah State back in front with a kill before the Lady Tigers scored the final two points, capped by a Walker service ace, to take the set 25-22.
LeMoyne-Owen held a 13-10 advantage midway through the second set before Savannah State answered. The Lady Tigers scored six consecutive points to move ahead 16-13, with
Hope White delivering a service ace during the run.
Savannah State maintained control from there, and a
Nyalah Smith block closed out the 25-19 victory and gave the SSU a 2-0 advantage in the match.
The Magicians made their strongest push early in the third, jumping out to an 11-3 lead. Savannah State methodically erased the deficit, eventually tying the set at 13 on a Walker service ace before McLendon-Johnson's kill gave the Lady Tigers their first lead of the frame.
LeMoyne-Owen later pulled even again at 19, but Savannah State responded down the stretch. Lawrence delivered an ace to make it 21-19, and the Lady Tigers eventually reached match point on a Woods kill. Lawrence then finished the night with her 11th kill, giving Savannah State the 25-22 set victory and completing the sweep.
For LeMoyne-Owen, Kennedy White led the Magicians with 10 kills, while Jordan Williams added nine. Madelyn Ross recorded 22 assists and four service aces.
Savannah State will conclude Crossover play against Tuskegee on Saturday at 10:30am.
