Tigers Drop Last Second Heartbreaker To Fort Valley State

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State saw their 12 game home winning streak come to an end on Thursday night following their 79-78 loss to Fort Valley State in Tiger Arena.

It was the Tigers first loss in Tiger Arena since falling to Tuskegee on January 4, 2025.

SSU opened the game with a 6-2 lead thanks to 3-pointers from Javonte Landy and Zion Davis.

With the contest tied at 6-6, the Tigers used a 9-2 spurt to build a 15-8 advantage with 14:32 left in the half but FVSU answered with a 14-3 run to take a 22-18 lead.

Down 22-17, Savannah State strung together a 15-2 rally that gave them a 32-24 lead with just under five minutes remaining.

The Wildcats were able to slice their deficit to 34-33 before SSU finished the half with a jumper by Braylon Jackson and a layup by Brandon Johnson to take a 38-35 lead into the locker room.

A 3-pointer by Davis to start the second half pushed the Savannah State lead to six but FVSU would not go away and tied the game at 41 at the 16:20 mark.

Down 60-58, the Tigers scored the next six points to go ahead 64-60 but Fort Valley State responded with a 11-0 run that gave the visitors from middle Georgia a 71-64 lead with 5:05 left.

Not to be outdone, Savannah State answered with a run of their own, scoring the next eight points to go ahead 72-71 with 3:25 showing on the clock.

A layup put the Wildcats ahead 73-72 but SSU answered with a pair of free throws by Jackson to go in front 74-73.

After exchanging baskets, a steal by Davis led to a layup by Jordan Mikel with 17 seconds left to give Savannah State a 78-77 lead but the Wildcats hit the game winner two seconds later on Aidain Lambert's layup.

Following a timeout, Landy attempted a short jumper with three seconds left but it fell short.

In a game that had nine ties and 17 lead changes, Zyere Edwards came off the bench to spark SSU with a team-high 14 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Jackson, another reserve player, added 13 points.

Landy finished with 11 points and 9 rebounds while Davis chipped in 10.

Mikel and Chancellor Wilson scored 9 points each, Ladarrius Chigano had 6, James Leach contributed 3 points and 5 blocks, Johnson added 2 and Michael swift scored 1 point.

Savannah State (5-7, 5-5 SIAC) will host Clark Atlanta on January 10 at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
