FRANKFORT, Ky.- Savannah State led by as many as 11 points in the second half but could not hold on to the lead in a 78-75 loss to Kentucky State on Saturday afternoon in the William Exum HPER Center.
The Tigers were down 43-38 early in the second period before stringing together a 21-5 run to take a 59-48 lead with 13:19 left in the game.
KSU was able to get within four at the 9:23 mark but a layup and a free throw by
Braylon Jackson and a layup by
James Leach pushed the Tigers lead to 67-58.
The Thorobreds chipped away at the SSU lead and tied the score at 71 with 2:19 on the clock.
A jumper by
Zyere Edwards gave Savannah State a 75-74 lead with 1:04 left but KSU finished the game with the final four points to earn the win.
Kentucky State started the game by scoring the first five points. A 3-pointer by
Javonte Landy gave SSU their first points of the contest with 18:39 remaining.
KSU built a nine point lead but saw Savannah State get as close as two before the Thorobreds went ahead 40-32 with 2:30 remaining in the half.
Landy hit a pair of free throws and then drilled a 3-pointer to make the score 40-37 and a free throw by
Jordan Mikell with 1:07 showing cut KSU's lead to 40-38 for the final points of the opening half.
The Tigers finished the game with more points off turnovers (26), bench points (28) and points in the paint (42).
Savannah State shot 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the free throw line, even though they only had ten attempts as compared to 26 for KSU.
Leach had 18 points for the Tigers and Landy added 17 more and five assists.
Edwards finished with nine points and six assists, Jackson and
Michael Swift scored seven apiece and
Chancellor Wilson added six. Swift also finished with six rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Mikell fouled out but not before chipping in five points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Ladarrius Chigano added four points and
Kelvin Cochran netted two.
Savannah State (10-9, 10-7 SIAC) will host Albany State on February 5 at 7:30 p.m.
