JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- Jayden Boykin came off the bench to score a career-high 23 points in Savannah State's 69-48 setback to Edward Waters on Saturday afternoon at the Adams-Jenkins Complex.
Boykin played 31 minutes and finished the game making 7-of-10 shots from the field and 8-of-13 free throw attempts while adding six rebounds, two assists, one steal and one block. She also hit the Lady Tigers lone 3-point attempt.
The contest was a homecoming for Jacksonville, Florida native
Ansley Hicks who had seven points, four rebounds and one steal.
SSU trailed 11-6 in the opening quarter but a tip-in and a free throw by
Jazmin Thornton drew the Lady Tigers to within 11-9Â with 2:47 on the clock.
Edward Waters closed the quarter with the final four points to take a 15-9 advantage into the second quarter.
EWU began the second quarter with a 8-1 spurt to extend their lead to 23-10 but Savannah State used a 10-4 rally to go into intermission down 27-20.
An 11-0 run by Edward Waters to start the third quarter put SSU behind 38-20. The Lady Tigers were able to trim their deficit to 43-31 at the 3:18 mark, following a 3-pointer by Boykin but EWU was able to take a 52-35 lead into the final ten minutes of play.
Savannah State shot 50 percent from the field in the fourth quarter but were outscored 17-13.
Haylee Malcum and Thornton both had five points for SSU,
Jaliyah Harper scored four points while
Sanai Chisholm and
Makaila Johnson both scored two points.
Savannah State (6-8, 5-8 SIAC) will start a three-game home stand on January 19 against Allen in Tiger Arena at 5:30 p.m.
