SAVANNAH, Ga.- Jazmin Thornton had 21 points and seven rebounds while
Jayden Boykin added 19 points and six steals in a 68-66 setback to Allen on Monday evening inside Tiger Arena.
Savannah State led 66-59 with 4:22 left in the fourth quarter but Allen finished the contest by scoring the final nine points to secure the victory.
In the first quarter, SSU trailed 6-2 but answered with a 10-0 run to go ahead 12-6. The Lady Tigers led 17-10 with 1:44 left in the quarter and was ahead 19-13 when the quarter ended.
Fueled by back-to-back 3-pointers by
Jaliyah Harper and Boykin, a 9-0 run early in the second quarter opened up a 28-15 lead for the Lady Tigers.
Allen was able to pull to within seven but a layup and a free throw by Thornton gave SSU a 34-24 lead with 29 seconds left.
Savannah State led 34-26 going into the half and a jumper by Thornton and a 3-pointer by Harper to open the third quarter increased the SSU lead to 39-26.
The Yellow Jackets chipped away at their deficit and cut the Savannah State lead to 50-46 with 2:18 remaining in the quarter.
SSU was able to to go ahead by seven but Allen scored the final three points of the quarter which cut Savannah State's lead to 56-52 as they entered the final ten minutes of play.
Allen opened the fourth quarter with a 3-pointer to close their gap to one but a free throw and a jumper by
Haylee Malcum put SSU ahead 59-55 with 7:29 remaining.
After Allen got within 61-59, SSU countered with a layup and a free throw by Boykin and a layup by
Sanai Chisholm for a 66-59 advantage with 4:22 on the clock.
Chisholm's basket would be the final points scored by the Lady Tigers as they ended the remainder of the game making three turnovers and missing six shots from the field and three free throws.
Harper ended the night with eight points, four assists and four rebounds while Chisholm finished with seven points. Malcum had six rebounds and five points,
Raven Birt scored four points and
Saniya Rice chipped in two points.
Savannah State, which falls to 6-9 overall and 5-9 in conference play, will host LeMoyne-Owen on January 22 at 5:30 p.m.
