Lady Tigers Take Down Brewton-Parker

SAVANNAH, Ga.- After losing their first two matches of the season, Savannah State has now won two in a row.

The Lady Tigers earned their first win of the season on September 9 against Paine and improved to 2-2 following Thursday's 3-1 victory over visiting Brewton-Parker.

The Tiger Arena crowd saw SSU win the first two sets by identical scores of 25-22 before falling in the third set 25-21. Savannah State earned the win in the match with a decisive 25-12 win in the fourth set.

Savannah State fell behind 4-0 in the opening set and trailed 5-1 before rallying to tie and eventually go ahead 8-6. Clinging to a 19-18 advantage, SSU scored three straight points to increase their lead to 22-18. BPC answered with three points of their own to pull within 22-21 but kills by Iyonna Pike and Savannah Everett along with a block by Mina Ezikpe rallied SSU to victory.

The Barons took a early 3-0 lead in the second set and led 6-2 before SSU scored four straight points to tie the set. Down by one, Savannah State scored four points to go ahead 14-11. The set remained close until the Lady Tigers used back-to-back kills by Everett along with a service ace to increase their lead to 19-14. SSU led 23-17 late in the set before the Barons rallied to slice their deficit to 24-22 but a kill by Everett sealed the win in the set for a 2-0 lead.

SSU trailed by five in the third set but responded with five consecutive points to tie the set at 18. The Lady Tigers were down by three and used a kill by Everett to close their gap to 23-21 but the Barons scored the final two points to get the win.

A service error by Brewton-Parker coupled with back-to-back kills by Everett and Pike gave SSU a 3-0 advantage to open the fourth set. Ahead by two, the Lady Tigers used a 4-0 mini-run to go ahead 11-5 and another 4-0 spurt gave the Orange & Blue a 15-6 lead. A kill by Everett along with three errors by BPC increased the Savannah State advantage to 19-8. Brewton-Parker got as close as 21-12 before SSU ended the set with a pair of kills by Nyalah Smith and two service aces by Saniaa Dickey to claim the victory.

The non-conference win improves SSU to 2-2 overall.

Amiyah Walker had a double-double with 28 assists and 14 digs to go with her two kills, two aces and two blocks. Everett almost had a double-double with 14 kills, nine digs and four aces.

Ezikpe finished with four kills and three blocks, Pike had six kills, three blocks and three digs while Dickey had five assists, six aces and 13 digs. Aaliyah Saunders finished with six kills, two aces, four blocks and five digs while Mya McCall chipped in one assist, two aces and nine digs. Kira Raby added two assists, three aces and 11 digs while Smith had eight kills, two blocks and three digs.

Savannah State will host Paine on September 17 in Tiger Arena at 6 p.m.
