SAVANNAH, Ga.- Coming off of a record-breaking year, the Savannah State University volleyball team is still in preseason mode as they prepare for the 2025 season.
The Lady Tigers finished second in the East Division a year ago and lost in the semi-finals of the conference tournament.
This year they hope to come back home with the tournament trophy in their hand.
The team reported for preseason camp on August 11 and when asked what has she seen from the team so far, head coach Roseligah Obunaga said that she likes their adaptation to the Savannah culture.Â
"They are very excited about the program and working together as a team."
Obunaga said that some of the goals she had for the team during the preseason was "coordination and matching up the new students with the returners, blending the lineup as much as I can."
The coach said that she has been pleased with the play of the defense thus far.Â
"The defense looks good. The positions I graduated have been filled with people matching the same talent so I am hoping they can grow into it and get better."
When asked how do you mix the competition of players competing for spots with making sure your system is being learned so that the team jells as one unit, Obunaga replied "It takes time to mix the competition especially not knowing the hand of our opponents. We do what we can do best on our side to get ready to start studying our opponents and that will be during our first crossover in Albany Georgia."
The team opens the new season with a tough slate of non-conference opponents but Obunaga feels those matches will prepare the squad for the conference matches.
"Playing the first game at our home court is always tough, however every year I get different caliber of student-athletes that learn how to adapt to the system quickly. I am praying this is one of them."
