Softball Sweeps Doubleheader From Allen

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State swept a doubleheader from visiting Allen at the SSU Softball Field on Saturday afternoon by scores of 10-3 and 12-4.

Ariana Battle was the winning pitcher in both games. 

Battle pitched four innings in the first game and gave up one hit and no runs while striking out five while in the second game she pitched four innings and surrendered three hits, two runs and one walk while recording five strikeouts.

Savannah State loaded the bases in the third inning of the first game with Kennedy Alsbrook being hit by a pitch, Ansley Hudson drawing a walk and Neveah Ford reaching base on an error by the second baseman. Alsbrook scored when Ambria Guye was issued a walk and a ground-out by Caleigh Powell allowed Hudson to score. Following a walk being issued to Jayla Alexander and a strikeout by Battle, Phaedra Smith hit a two-run single that sent home Ford and Guye. Madison Starling-Martin reached base on an error by the short stop that allowed Alexander to score a run.

The Yellow Jackets scored twice in the top of the fifth but SSU answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning when Smith led off with a walk and scored on a ground out by Alsbrook.

Allen scored another run in the sixth and the Lady Tigers answered with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.

Guye singled, Powell was hit by a pitch and Nia Fisher walked to load the bases. Guye scored on a wild pitch and Smith walked to reload the bases for Starling-Martin who struck out but Alsbrook hit a single that scored Powell and when Hudson reached base on an error by the right fielder, Fisher and Smith came home to put the game away.

Smith had two RBI and scored twice, Guye scored twice while Hudson and Alsbrook drove in two runs apiece.

In the second game, Ford had a single in the second inning and scored on a single by Alsbrook. Walks to Hudson and Carissa Ball loaded the bases for Guye whose walk allowed Alsbrook to score and a double by Powell brought home Ball and Guye for a 4-0 lead.

Allen scored twice in the top of the fourth to slice SSU's lead in half but the Lady Tigers scored seven times in the bottom of the inning for a 11-2 cushion.

Hudson and Ball were hit by pitches and a single by Guye scored Hudson. A walk to Powell loaded the bases for Starling-Martin who hit a double that plated Ball and Guye. A ground-out by Smith allowed Powell to score. Following a walk to Alsbrook, Fisher reached base on an error and it allowed Starling-Martin to go home and a single by Hudson allowed Alsbrook to score. A walk to Ball loaded the bases for Guye who was hit by a pitch which sent home Fisher.

The Yellow Jackets added two runs in the top of the fifth to make the score 11-4.

In the bottom of the fifth, Savannah State loaded the bases with Smith hitting a single, Ford reaching base on an error and Alsbrook being hit by a pitch. Fisher was also hit by a pitch and it allowed Smith to score the final run of the day.

Guye had three RBI and scored twice, Ball and Alsbrook both scored twice while Powell, Starling-Martin and Fisher all had two RBI each.

Savannah State (13-16, 9-8 SIAC) and Allen will conclude their series on Sunday at 10 a.m.
