SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State will end their spring football practice with the annual Orange & Blue Game on March 28 at 4 p.m. at Theodore A. Wright Stadium.
The Tigers started spring workouts on March 3 with practice starting at 6:30 a.m.
Head football coach Aaron Kelton said that they have about 90 players participating in spring football and that he and his staff are pleased with what they have seen thus far.
"Spring practice has gone really well up to this point. The team is learning and working to get better. Several guys are taking the leadership roles and it is showing with our good solid practices."
When asked what were some of the objectives that he wanted the team to accomplish during the spring, Kelton said "We want to make sure that all of the players a really learning the systems and getting plenty of reps. We are hoping to shorten the learning curves for the young players in our program."
Kelton adds that during the spring period, he has seen quite a few players step up and become team leaders.
"Our team leaders right now have been Darrian Bell, William Jones, Ahlik Booker and Gary Davis, Jr on defense. On offense, Jadon Adams, Joe Hampton, Khiry Wallace and Christian Burks. They are all doing a great job and the team is dialed in and listening and taking coaching well."
The team lost 23 seniors from the last season but Kelton states that the staff is evaluating players to see who is ready to replace those guys.
"We lost some really key players from the fall and they will be hard to replace. We have talented young guys working everyday trying to show the staff and team that they are ready to step up and have a bigger role in the program. We may never replace all of those guys but we can work hard to get multiple guys to improve and slowly take control of their roles in the program."
Anyone who didn't participate in spring practice might get a chance to prove themselves at a later date.
"We are scheduling our walk-on tryout after spring practice so we can get a good look at what we currently have and what we need. The walk-on's will add depth and they will get our full attention after spring practice. We had 23 walk-on's sing up to tryout this spring."
When asked about the format for the Orange & Blue game, Kelton said "We will have an offense verses defense controlled scrimmage to end our spring. We want to get as many good positive reps for guys as possible. We want to walk away healthy and having had a good positive experience while learning the systems."
Savannah State is coming off a 5-5 season in 2024 and will open the 2025 season on August 30 at Theodore A. Wright Stadium against SIAC foe and I-95 archrival Edward Waters at 6 p.m.
