HOOVER, Ala.- Savannah State opened play in the SIAC Crossover on Tuesday with a 10-7 win over LeMoyne-Owen at Hoover Metropolitan Complex.
SSU fell to Miles in their second game of the day, 6-1.
After giving up a run in the first inning against LeMoyne-Owen, SSU scored four times in the second inning to take the lead with
Caleigh Powell,
Jayla Alexander,
Kennedy Alsbrook and
Ansley Hudson crossing home plate.
The Magicians scored four times in the fourth to go ahead 5-4 and added two more runs in the fifth for a 7-4 advantage but Savannah State answered by scoring twice in the top of the sixth and four more times in the seventh.
In the sixth inning,
Carissa Ball singled and scored on a triple by Hudson and Hudson scored on a ground out by Battle.
Alexander led off the seventh with a single and scored when Ball reached base on a error by the center fielder. A bases clearing double by
Ambria Guye allowed Ball, Hudson and
Ariana Battle to score.
Nia Fisher was the winning pitcher. Fisher pitched 5.2 innings in relief and struck out three batters.
Hudson had four hits, scored three times and drove in two runs, Battle had two RBI, Guye had three RBI and two hits while Alexander and Ball both scored twice and had two hits.
In the loss to Miles, SSU scored their only run in the seventh when Guye led off with a single up the middle and scored on a single to left field by
Phaedra Smith.
Battle was tagged with the loss, giving up three earned runs while issuing one walk and striking out one.
Alexander had two singles in the loss.
Savannah State (8-10, 4-4 SIAC) will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on Spring Hill and Tuskegee.
