SAVANNAH, Ga.- Playing their home opener, the Savannah State University softball team could not find their offensive rhythm in Friday's doubleheader with University of South Carolina Beaufort as they lost both games at the SSU Softball Field.
The Lady Tigers lost the first game 18-3 and fell in the nightcap 10-2.
SSU ended the day with seven hits and six errors while leaving 20 runners on base.
In the first game, the Sand Sharks struck for seven runs in the top of the first inning and added four more in the second for a 11-0 advantage.
Savannah State answered with three runs in the bottom of the second.
Ariadna Diaz-Jimenez led off with a single which was followed by
Nia Fisher and
Neveah Ford each reaching base on errors to load the bases with no outs.
Phaedra Smith grounded out into a fielder's choice but it allowed
Carissa Ball to cross home plate.
Ansley Hudson hit a fly ball to right field which brought home Ford and Smith to make the score 11-3.
USCB scored three times in the fourth and four times in the fifth to get the win.
Hudson had a pair of hits and two RBI in the game and
Ambria Guye hit a double for Savannah State.
Zarria Smith was the losing pitcher. The senior pitcher gave up seven earned runs in 1.2 innings while recording one strikeout.
The Sand Sharks scored four times in the second inning and five times in the third in the second game for a 9-0 lead.
The USCB pitcher had a no hitter going until Hudson led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a single. Three batters later, a single by
Kennedy Alsbrook allowed Hudson to score SSU's first run.
The Sand Sharks scored a run in the top of the fifth and Savannah State scored a run in the bottom half of the inning with Fisher drawing a walk and scoring on a single by Hudson.
Hudson had a pair of hits, scored a run, drove in a run and had a steal for the Lady Tigers. Fisher was tagged with the loss. The sophomore from Jacksonville, Florida struck out four batters in her five innings while giving up eight earned runs.
Savannah State (3-3) will continue their nine game homestand on February 19 with a non-conference doubleheader against Coastal College of Georgia with the first pitch being thrown at 1:00 p.m.
