SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State fell to 3-5 on the season, after dropping a double header to College of Coastal Georgia on Tuesday afternoon at the SSU Softball Field.
SSU lost by scores of 8-2 and 9-1.
In the opening game, the Lady Tigers scored both of their runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Ariana Battle and
Ambria Guye drew back-to-back walks and after
Madison Starling-Martin struck out, Battle and Guye were able to score, thanks to an error by the catcher.
Savannah State would not score another run the remainder of the game, despite having runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth and sixth innings.
The Mariners would score four runs in the top of the second inning and added three more in the third. The final run of the game came in the fifth inning
Jayla Alexander went 2-for-3 at the plate for Savannah State, Guye added a double and Battle stole a pair of bases.
Nia Fisher was tagged with the loss on the mound. Fisher pitched seven innings and struck out seven batters while issuing seven walks and giving up six hits and eight runs.
The second game saw SSU score just one run off three hits while stranding ten runners on base.
Coastal College of Georgia scored a run in the top of the first inning but the Lady Tigers tied the score in the bottom of the second.
Ariadna Diaz-Jimenez reached base on an error by the short stop,
Kennedy Alsbrook singled to center field and
Phaedra Smith drew a walk to load the bases for
Ansley Hudson who was also issued a walk which allowed Diaz-Jimenez to cross home plate.
The Mariners pulled ahead 4-1 with three runs in the third inning before scoring once in the sixth and four more times in the seventh.
Alsbrook had a pair of hits for Savannah State while
Aaliyah Martin took the loss on the mound. Martin lasted four innings and surrendered ten hits, eight runs and one walk while recording three strikeouts.
The Lady Tigers will continue their home stand on February 22 when they host Claflin in a double header with the first pitch being thrown at 1 p.m.
