Savannah State Drops Close Road Decision At Morehouse

ATLANTA, Ga.- After defeating Morehouse at home on January 8, Savannah State could not get the season sweep, losing to the Maroon Tigers 65-59 on Monday evening at Forbes Arena.

SSU led 18-13 but Morehouse scored five straight points to knot the contest at 18 with just over nine minutes on the clock.


In a game that had two ties and two lead changes, Morehouse got some separation in the first half, using a 9-2 spurt to increase their five point lead to 37-25 with 18 seconds left in period.

Javonte Landy ended the first half with a pair of free throws to send SSU into the locker room down 37-27.

Morehouse opened the second half with nine unanswered points to go ahead 48-29.

With 11:21 remaining, SSU found themselves trailing 55-34 but used a 16-4 run to whittle their deficit to single digits with four and a half minutes left.

During their run, the Tigers received scoring from five different players with Ayjay Plain making two layups, Jeremiah Barze getting a dunk and a 3-pointer, Kasai Fontanez hitting a layup and a free throw while Landy made a jumper and Qua King hit a 3-pointer.

Morehouse led by 11 with 4:20 left but Savannah State ended the game out-scoring the Maroon Tigers 9-4 with Plain making two 3-pointers and King adding another.

Savannah State shot a respectable 46.9 percent from the field and made seven 3-pointers. The Tigers never did get warm at the free throw line, making 6 of 11 shots while Morehouse (11-10, 8-5 SIAC) had 25 shots from the charity stripe.

Plain, King and Landy all scored 12 points for SSU (8-10, 6-8 SIAC).

Plain also had five rebounds, three assists and two steals. King added five assists, four rebounds and three steals while Landy had four rebounds and a steal.


Barze added seven points and seven rebounds, Michael Swift scored five, Jordan Mikel and Jerry Maxinaurd chipped in four apiece and Fontanez contributed three

Savannah State will look to bounce back on February 8when they host Benedict at 4 p.m. in Tiger Arena.
