SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State wrapped up their three-game series with Spring Hill on Sunday afternoon with a 12-6 loss at Tiger Field.
The Tigers led 4-1 after four innings of play but were outscored 11-2 in the final five innings.
Reginald Tuggle led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple down the left field line and scored on a single to center field by
Kendal Spencer.
In the second inning,
David Sanders and
Julian Grier hit back-to-back singles and Tuggle drew a walk to load the bases for Spencer whose single to center field brought home Sanders and Grier for a 3-0 lead.
After a scoreless third, the Badgers scored a run in the top of the fourth and SSU answered in the bottom half of the inning when Grier singled and scored on a double down the left field line by Tuggle to increase their advantage to 4-1.
Spring Hill sent five runners across home plate in the fifth and added a run in the sixth and seventh innings to go ahead 8-4.
The Badgers went ahead 11-4 in the top of the eighth, but Savannah State got two of those runs back in the bottom of the inning.
Chandler Hicks was hit by a pitch,
Bryce Bause doubled and Tuggle drew a walk to load the bases. Spencer grounded out to the third baseman, but it allowed Hicks to score and a single by
Brevin Smith sent home Bause to slice their deficit to 11-6.
Spring Hill (7-7, 5-1 SIAC) added a run in the ninth for the six-run advantage to clinch the series win.
The teams combined for 18 runs, 20 hits and four errors while leaving 24 runners on base.
Spencer had three hits and four RBI for the Tigers, Tuggle added a double and a triple while Grier had two hits and scored twice.
Savannah State used six pitchers in the game and
Joshua Krutchik was tagged with the loss. Krutchik lasted two-thirds of an inning and surrendered two hits, five runs and three walks.
Also seeing action on the mound were
Gregorio Gonzalez,
Noah Brown,
Kijani Clarington,
Giovante Tomlins and
Aidan Turner.
SSU (5-5, 4-2 SIAC) will travel to Kentucky State for a three-game series on March 1 and 2.
