Softball Splits Doubleheader With Claflin

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State split a double header with Claflin on Saturday afternoon at the SSU Softball Field.

The Panthers won the first game 4-2 and SSU won the second game 12-1.

In the first game, Claflin struck first with two runs in the first inning but Savannah State knotted the game in the bottom of the sixth.

Ansley Hudson led off  the sixth with a double to center field and then stole third. Following a pop up to second by Jayla Alexander, Hudson stole home and the next batter, Ambria Guye, hit a solo home run over the center field fence to make the score 2-2.

The Panthers scored twice in the seventh off of two hits to go ahead 4-2 and Savannah State went hitless in their turn at bat to end the game.

Guye went 2-for-3 at the plate while scoring a run and getting a RBI. Hudson, who stole two bases, had the only other hit for the Lady Tigers, a double.

Aaliyah Martin was the losing pitcher. Martin pitched all seven innings and gave up nine hits, four runs and two walks while striking out two.

In the nightcap, SSU's bats woke up, getting 11 hits.

Two runs in the bottom of the second and four runs in the third gave the Lady Tigers a 6-0 lead.

In the second, Caleigh Powell doubled and scored on a double by Carissa Ball who ended up scoring on an error by the right fielder. In the third inning, Alexander, Kennedy Alsbrook and Madison Martin-Starling all hit RBI singles and a walk to Phaedra Smith with the bases loaded allowed a run to score.

Claflin scored a run in the fourth to prevent a shutout but the Lady Tigers responded with six runs on five hits in the bottom half of the inning that were keyed by a two run double by Alsbrook and a two run single by Hudson to make the score 12-1.

The Panthers (5-5) loaded the bases in the fifth but were unable to score.

Alexander, Alsbrook, Starling-Martin and Ball all had two hits for SSU while Alsbrook had three RBI and Hudson drove in two runs and scored twice. Alexander and Ball both scored two runs.

Nia Fisher struck out four batters in her five innings on the mound, holding the Panthers to three hits and one run.
