SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State improved their SIAC record to 4-1 by splitting a double header with Spring Hill on Saturday afternoon at Tiger Field.
Spring Hill won the first game 9-7 but the pitching duo of
Brevin Smith and
Solomon Masters helped SSU to a 3-1 win in the second game.
In the opening game, the teams combined for 16 runs, 23 hits and three errors while stranding 19 runners on base.
The Tigers put three runs on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first with
Farah Castillo and
Johan Sandoval both hitting RBI singles and a walk issued to
David Sanders with the bases loaded brought in a run.
Spring Hill scored four runs in the second inning and another in the third for a 5-3 advantage but in the bottom of the third, SSU a two-run double by
Reginald Tuggle to tie the game at 5-5.
The Badgers scored a run in the top of the fifth and another in the top of the sixth to go ahead 7-5.
Savannah State answered in the bottom of the sixth when
Kendal Spencer and Castillo both scored a run to tie the game at 7-7.
The Tigers left the bases loaded and could not score in the seventh and after a scoreless eighth, Spring Hill scored twice in the top of the ninth in what would be the game winning runs.
Tuggle had two RBI and Spencer scored twice while Castillo,
Addrian McNeal Jr and
Brevin Smith all had two hits.
Adonis Perez pitched the final four innings in relief of
Brayden Thomas and was tagged with the loss. Perez surrendered three hits, two runs and two walks while striking out three.
In the second game, Smith and Master combined to limit the Badgers to five hits and one run while recording six strikeouts and issuing one walk.
Julian Grier reached base on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the fourth and scored on a double to left field by Tuggle for a 1-0 lead.
Spring Hill (6-7, 4-1 SIAC) tied the game in the top of the sixth but the Tigers responded by getting RBI singles from
Tyler Tucker and Tuggle in the bottom half of the inning to pull ahead 3-1.
Tuggle had two hits and two RBI in the contest while McNeal and
Hunter Bradshaw also had two hits and
William Mahoney IV added a double.
Smith pitched five innings, gave up five hits, one run and two walks while striking out four while Masters pitched two innings and allowed no hits and one walk while striking out two.
The teams left 16 runners on base.
The series decider between the two squads will be on Sunday at 12pm at Tiger Field.
