Plain’s 26 Leads Tigers Past Allen

COLUMBIA, S.C.- Ayjay Plain scored a career-high 26 points to lift Savannah State to a 69-58 road win over Allen on Wednesday evening. The contest was originally scheduled for January 25 but was postponed because of inclement weather.

Plain made 11 of 21 field goal attempts and knocked down three 3-pointers while getting three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block.

The win was the Tigers first road victory since beating Kentucky State in Frankfort, Kentucky on November 30, 2024.

With the win, Savannah State sweeps the season series with Allen, having beat them in Tiger Arena on February 10.

SSU went into halftime leading by two points and started the second half with a 3-pointer by Javonte Landy and a layup and a free throw by Plain to extend their lead to 38-30.

When Allen (6-18, 2-16 SIAC) made the score 40-35, the Tigers reeled off the next six points with back-to-back dunks by Jeremiah Barze and Plain followed by a layup by Plain to pull ahead 46-35 at the 15:03 mark.

The Yellow Jackets trimmed Savannah State's lead to 55-51 with 8:45 remaining but the Tigers answered by scoring the next six points during a 9-2 stretch that was capped by a 3-pointer by Michael Swift  that saw their lead go back to 11 at 64-53 with 4:39 left.

Allen never got closer than eight the rest of the way.

During the game, SSU scored 26 points off 21 Allen turnovers while getting 13 second chance points, 13 fast break points and 36 points in the paint while holding a 29 to 23 rebounding edge.

Savannah State shot 50 percent from the field in the second half and ended the game shooting 47.4 percent while making 40 percent of their 3-point attempts.

In a game that featured four ties and 11 lead changes, Allen led most of the way in the first half.

The Tigers trailed 25-19 with just under five minutes left in the opening period before scoring eight unanswered points to take a 27-25 lead.

With the score tied at 30, Swift hit a jumper with one second left to send SSU into the locker room with a 32-30 lead.

Barze added 17 points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals for the Tigers while Landy contributed 11 points, five rebounds and five steals.

Also scoring for SSU were Swift who had seven points, seven rebounds, three steals and two blocks.

Qua King had four points and three assists while Jaydon Cousin and Kasai Fontanez scored two points each.

Savannah State (11-11, 9-9 SIAC) will travel down I-95 to face Edward Waters on February 22 at 7:30 p.m.
