Late Lead Slips Away In Home Loss To Allen

SAVANNAH, Ga.- Savannah State fell to 11-10 overall and 7-8 in the Southern intercollegiate Athletic conference, after a 68-66 setback to Allen on Monday night, in a game played at Tiger Arena.

It was the Lady Tigers first home loss since January 4, 2025.

With less than two minutes left in third quarter, SSU led by 12 but the Yellow Jackets ended the quarter with a 7-0 run to cut Savannah State's led to 50-45.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Lady Tigers led by six but Allen fought back to tie the score at 59 with 4:07 remaining.

Savannah State led 66-64 but a foul by Myasia Jones sent the Yellow Jackets to the free throw line where they made both shots to tie the game with 18 seconds left.

A SSU turnover coupled by a foul by Sanai Chisholm sent Allen back to the free throw line where they made two more free throws that proved to be the game winner.

The Lady Tigers had 2.2 seconds left but could not get up a shot.

Mya Byrd had 18 points, five assists, four steals and three rebounds for SSU and Alayah Birch added 16 points and five assists. Both fouled out in the fourth quarter.

The Lady Tigers led 12-9 after one quarter of play and used a 12-2 run early in the second quarter to stretch their advantage to 28-16 with 3:32 showing on the clock.

Allen (14-7, 9-5 SIAC) was able to get as close as seven and Savannah State held a 34-26 lead at the half.

A layup and a free throw by Birch to start the third quarter put SSU up by 11 and after a 3-pointer by Allen, back-to-back layups by Birch and Jazmin Thornton gave Savannah State a 41-29 lead with 6:17 remaining in the quarter.

Once again, the Yellow Jackets cut their deficit to seven but SSU responded with a pair of free throws from Jaliyah Harper and a 3-pointer by Byrd for a 50-38 lead at the 1:45 mark of the third quarter.

Thornton added 11 points and five rebounds while  Harper had eight points and two steals. Jones had six points, eight rebounds and foul steals and Jayden Boykin also had six points to go with her seven rebounds. Chisholm scored one point.

With the win, Allen earns the season sweep over Savannah State.

Savannah State will travel to Atlanta, Georgia on February 17 to face Clark Atlanta at Epps Gymnasium at 5:30 p.m.
