JACKSON, Tenn.- Lane broke open a close game with a big run and went on to defeat Savannah State on Saturday evening 94-75 in a game played at Lane Gymnasium.
Savannah State found themselves down 74-69 with just over five minutes remaining but Lane answered with a 18-4 run to stretch their advantage to 19 with 1:01 left.
SSU whittled their deficit down to single digits but the Dragons scored the next ten points to put Savannah State away.
The Dragons led 33-27 in the first half before Savannah State was able to tie the game at 35 at the 2:50 mark.
Lane built a eight point lead late in the half but a 3-pointer by
Zion Davis with 14 seconds showing on the clock sent SSU into the half down 43-38.
The Dragons extended their lead to 54-43 with just under 18 minutes left before Savannah State rallied to knot the contest at 65 with 9:35 showing.
Savannah State out-rebounded Lane 30 to 25 and finished the game with more second chance points (14-4), bench points (28-17) and points in the paint (40-28).
The Tigers shot 45.9 percent from the floor, 42.9 percent from beyond the arch and made 72.2 percent of their free throw attempts.
Javonte Landy and Davis both had 19 points while
James Leach chipped in ten.
Zyere Edwards and
Brandon Johnson both had three steals, Landy dished out five assists,
Jordan Mikel blocked one shot and Leach grabbed six rebounds.
Savannah State (0-4, 0-2 SIAC) will play their home opener on December 4 at 7:30 p.m. against Central State.
