SAVANNAH, Ga.-
Amani Hamilton scored a game-high 15 points but Savannah State would fall to Tuskegee 58-50 in a game played at Tiger Arena on Saturday afternoon. It was the first home loss of the season for Savannah State as they fell to 6-7 overall and 2-5 in SIAC play. In addition to her 15 points, Hamilton had eight rebounds and a steal.
Trailing by ten points with just under four minutes left in the contest, SSU received back-to-back layups by K'yla Hankerson and another one by
Jazmin Thornton to pull within 52-48 at the 2:15 mark. Tuskegee scored the next six points to go ahead by ten before Thornton made a layup with two seconds remaining for the final points of the game.
Mya Byrd chipped in 13 points and five assists for SSU while Hankerson came off the bench to notch a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Savannah State got off to a slow start, not scoring their first points, a 3-pointer by Byrd, with 4:59 showing on the clock in the first quarter. The Golden Tigers led 11-5 but SSU answered with a layup and free throw from Byrd and a jumper by Hamilton to get within 11-10 with 43 seconds left. Tuskegee added a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to take a 13-10 lead after the first quarter.
A jumper by Hamilton tied the game at 15 and a Hamilton layup knotted the contest at 17 in the second quarter. Down 19-17, Savannah State put together a 9-0 run to go ahead 26-19 with 2:02 showing on the clock. SSU went into the half with a four point lead at 27-23.
Ahead 31-27 in the third quarter, a pair of jumpers by Hankerson and a free throw by
Ansley Hicks extended the Lady Tigers lead to 36-27 with 6:13 left in the quarter. Savannah State was ahead 38-29 with 4:11 remaining in the third quarter but Tuskegee ended the quarter with a 12-0 run as they took a 41-38 advantage into the fourth quarter. A layup by Hamilton to start the fourth quarter pulled the Lady Tigers within 41-40 but Tuskegee answered with a 11-2 run that gave the visitors from Alabama a 52-42 lead with 3:54 on the clock.
SSU had 16 points off of 18 Tuskegee turnovers and scored 32 points in the paint. To round out the Savannah State scoring, Thornton had five points.
Kayla Grant had four and Hicks added three.
The Lady Tigers will be back in action on January 11 with a trip to Albany State, in hopes to halting their three game losing skid. Since re-joining the SIAC, Savannah State has beat Albany State 11 consecutive times.
