ALBANY, Ga.- The road woes continue for the Savannah State women's basketball team after losing to Albany State 61-43 on Saturday afternoon in a game played at the ASU Jones Brothers HPER Complex.
The loss was the fourth straight for the Lady Tigers as their record fell to 6-8 overall and 2-6 in the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. It was also the first time Albany State defeated SSU since they rejoined the SIAC and their first victory over a Savannah State team since February 14, 2002.
The game was a homecoming of sorts for senior guard
Mya Byrd who hails from nearby Ashburn, Georgia which is less than 40 miles from Albany. Byrd finished the contest with nine points, two rebounds and one assist.
Byrd opened the game with a 3-pointer to give SSU the early lead. Savannah State led 8-6 before ASU responded with a 9-3 spurt to go ahead 15-11 with 1:16 left in the first quarter. A basket by
Alayah Birch drew SSU within two but the Golden Rams scored the final three points of the quarter to take a 18-13 lead.
Savannah State could only score six points in the second quarter as
Amani Hamilton scored on a tip in,
Jayden Boykin hit two free throws and Byrd made a jumper. The Lady Tigers trailed by as many as 15 points during the quarter and went into intermission down 33-19.
SSU came out sluggish in the third quarter and once again could only put six points on the scoreboard with Boykin making a jumper and Hamilton adding a jumper and two free throws.
Savannah State entered the fourth quarter down 45-25 and a jumper by Byrd sliced their deficit to 18. Both teams continued to trade baskets the remainder of the quarter. Although SSU outscored Albany State 18-16 in the quarter, their 20-point deficit at the beginning of the quarter proved too much to overcome.
Despite the setback, Savannah State had more offensive rebounds (19 to 17) and more blocks (7 to 6).
Hamilton had 12 points, nine rebounds and two blocks to lead the Lady Tigers. Birch added nine points and six rebounds and Boykin chipped in eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Jazmin Thornton contributed three points, three blocks, two rebounds and two steals,
Raven Birt had two points and
Myasia Jones had four rebounds, three steals, two blocks and two assists.
Savannah State will look for their first win of 2025 on January 13 on the road at Fort Valley State with a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
